Dearest Geobears
Keeping tabs with the class, updating the folks on the mundane ins and outs of daily life of engineering. Anybody down for a little bit of in and a whole lot of out? Maybe some In & Out?
Dearest Geobears,
I would like to wish everyone a prosperous new year. I
hope everyone is enjoying working or studying.
Somedays I work on slope stability, or slope
instability I guess a witty person would say; other
days I design soil nail walls, and some days I work on
geotechnical exploration reports. Other days, I
analyze liquefaction susceptibility and estimate
settlement, lateral spreading, and propagations of
such movements on the surface. Other days, I work on
groundwater monitoring, and some days, I work in the
field logging borings. Some times, during a slow hour,
I download some music to my iTunes, possibly some Dead
or Phish, or maybe I copy from a CD I own to iTunes so
I can listen while I work. There are sometimes during
the day that I go get a cup of water. I always get the
cold water, not the room-temperature water. I
occasionally, as do most people I assume, head down to
the restroom to freshen up. I take lunch daily. I
choose from a wide range of food for lunch - mexican,
italian, in & out, sometimes a slice of pizza. When I
have a cold or a sore throat, I try to remember to
bring some cough-drops, maybe some Ricola, to work
with me that day. I come in to work by seven, and I
try to leave by five. I have had to stay later to get
work done, and I have had to come in earlier, most
likely to get out to a job site early. I don't do much
physical labor, besides from breaking down samplers
when the driller and the helper need some assistance.
There are days when it is foggy and days that are
sunny. It rains now that it is the rainy season. I
have recently moved so now it takes forty minutes to
get into work and an hour to get home. I guess the
traffic is heavier during the evening commute. I
presume that is a safe conclusion, since it takes
longer. Likewise, I could say that the morning commute
has lighter traffic. Am I confusing anybody? There are
times I miss school, and then there are those times
when I remember Maarten hiding the copy he had of a
previous year's report. Such a tool. And just like
that I stop recollecting. Sometimes I make jokes,
other times, I think of a joke to tell, but never say
it, and there are times I think of a joke, and while
waiting for the perfect opening, I forget it. I hate
that. There must be a place in my brain, forever
damaged by misuse, that stores all these funny
comments. Or maybe, Jesus has told me, without me
knowing, not to say such a joke. Perhaps it may have
offended someone. Perhaps it was sexist or racist or
worse, not funny. Thank you Jesus, if that is true. I
don't think it is though, and that is why I hate
Jesus.
What do you guys do all day?
- Jeff
pS, have a good one.
