reyonthehill: GOP Jumping Ship
GOP Jumping Ship
As I wrote yesterday, the president has redefined fiscal irresponsibility at the federal level. And today, the president insisted "that Congress must help this ravaged city recover from Hurricane Katrina by approving billions he has requested for levee repair and compensation for Louisianans who lost homes." That is easy for the president to say, but for members of the majority party in Congress, they are now realizing that the government, plain-simply, has run out of money.

The president is playing the "king" role as he tours the nation and gives away billions of dollars. Insufficiently capable of understanding the dynamics of government and policy, the president believes the solution will be made with a wave of his hand. Congress receives the marching orders, and tries to make it work; sometimes, and maybe too often, the numbers make no sense and no solution exists.

The president is done. Bush can coast, assuming that he can avoid impeachment, which, at this moment, I predict he will not (yes, I predict G.W. Bush will become the third president to be impeached), through the rest of his term. Members of congress, and specifically GOP members, are thinking re-election, and with the number of negative items on the White House's plate far greater than the number of positives, the fleeting memories of the good ol' days (Bush reckons back often, "On September 11, 2001, ...") fading, moderate congressmen are jumping the sinking GOP ship.
