The New York Times has published a dandy of a graphic of the levels of shaking in the entire Bay Area following the great 1906 earthquake. From my interpretation of the different shades of brown (one of my favourite colors; british emphasis added), my home would have felt very strong shaking, based on the Modified Mercalli Index of VII. However, the MMI is developed by human input, an empirical formulation, and with a much larger population in the outer-lying areas of the SF Bay Area today, the MMI would undoubtedly have an increased level of "perceived" shaking.
