I've finished the book I was reading -- a great book by the way -- dealing with the issues a family has following their father's passing. Very humorous actually; recommended.

I am now moving on to another collection of short stories, The Night in Question by Tobias Wolff...

This is another one of those books I purchased while at Syracuse pretty-much based on its cover -- ain't it cool, the train and all. However, I did know of the author. Tobias Wolff had taught at Syracuse University and I had read This Boy's Life -- his memoir -- in a freshman writing class (an excellent book that would eventually become a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Ellen Barkin). Our major assignment in the course was to compare the book to the film; the book was better, something I wouldn't have originally thought.

When I had opened the book this morning I was stunned to find the book signed by the author on the title page. I hadn't waited in any line to have this book signed, I do know, so I am assuming there were leftover books from a book-signing event with Wolff at the university bookstore and I was fortunate to purchase a copy at a later date. Just my luck; this book could be worth a bundle some day.

Wolff's memoir is a great book! I read it shortly after I saw the movie and liked the book much more. Usually, but not always, I find the book from which a movie is adapted to be better (provided that the author is a good storyteller), since it can provide backstories, explanations, and even subsidiary plots which a movie may have to shorten or omit entirely. And congratulations on getting a signed copy!
