Top Five Cereals
I am an expert on breakfast cereal. Here are the top five all-time cereals, in no particular order... (Please note that any chocolate-based cereal is disqualified due to it being utterly disgusting, except Cookie Crisp, which is actually quite good, but did not make this list.)

Crispix

Just a clean good bowl of cereal. Every time. Crispix is versatile: rice on one side; corn on the other. Bonus for apparently being kosher, whatever that means.

Honey Nut Cheerios

Plain Cheerios kicks ass too (and would make the top ten), but for a bit more taste, Honey Nut cannot be beat. (And Apple Cinnamon Cheerios, if it still exists, is good for a spice-up every now and then.)

Corn Pops

This cereal hits the spot. It is just sweet enough to keep you interested, but clean enough to make you feel good afterwards. (Beware of "last bowl syndrome" from any box of Corn Pops however. The silver lining of this box, which seems to be unique, does not do the best job of preserving the cereal.)

Honey Bunches of Oats (with Almonds)

There is so much taste with every bite of Honey Bunches of Oats (with Almonds) without the dreary effect of tainting the milk. The final spoonful of every bowl is as good as the first.

Quaker Toasted Oatmeal (Honey Nut)

Image: Quaker Oats

This is probably the most underrated cereal, and that is probably because it is under the Quaker Oats brand, which doesn't do the best job of marketing. This is the tastiest cereal available, and the resulting lightly-sweetened milk makes one last great swig of a morning bowl of cereal.

Honorable Mention

Golden Grahams, Cheerios, Rice Krispies, Blueberry Morning, and Honeycomb.

De gustibus non disputandum est. I must humbly petition you to share your wisdom by answering three questions, O Great Shredder of Wheat and Cruncher of Cinnamon Toast: (1) what are your credentials upon which you base your expertise? (Saturday morning breakfasts do not count.) (2) what are the five WORST cereals? and (3) what is your opinion of hot cereals (oatmeal in its permutations, the various Cream of... cereals, Malt-O-Meal, CoCo Wheats, and so on)?

I found my new email signature, Cruncher of Cinnamon Toast.

(1) I've had cereal almost every day of my life, and I've made cereal three-meals-a-day for a great portion of it. I've tried almost every brand of cereal. Oh, I'm an expert.

(2) Anything with chocolate, that counts for three of the five. And then Wheat Chex (not Corn or Rice, which are quite good), and unfortunately, the new and "improved" (read: too much sugar, too much cinnamon) Cinnamon Toast Crunch. The remaining milk is littered with cinnamon particles; ungulpable.

(3) Hot cereal is alright, but it is not my cup of tea on a daily basis. (Similarly, I enjoy iced tea to regular tea.) There is just something beautiful about a cold bowl of cereal. But my favorite hot cereal flavor is apple cinnamon.

O Great Cruncher of Cinnamon Toast (marca registrada, Reyonthehill, Inc.), you have clearly and unequivocally established your credentials as a cereal maven, and I must humbly beg your pardon in daring to question them. I agree with you that the thought of flavoring cereal with chocolate (Kelloggs is introducing a chocolate variety of Special K with "chocolatey" nuggets--yuck!) is enough to give me nightmares. Virtually all of the presweetened cold cereals are far too sweet to my taste, so I guess that's why my choices in cold cereal are limited to granola and shredded wheat, with the occasional Chex cereal (not wheat, I agree) or Cheerios variety (not Fruity Cheerios--yuck!). As for hot cereals, they come in handy when you've run out of cement or plaster-of-Paris in a repair job.
