John McCain, who has always been a deficit hawk, has undergone a severe makeover, one that he hopes is more appealing to the conservative base he so sorely needs come election day.
But will words speak louder than actions. McCain voted against Bush's tax cuts, twice, and for good reason. They were bad policy. But rescinding Bush's tax cuts, or allowing them to expire, is tantamount to raising taxes. And that is kryptonite to the conservative base.
If McCain is elected and holds true to this pledge, will the U.S. have a balanced budget at any time in a McCain administration? That is an easy one... no.
