Doonesbury Attacks reyonthehill

This past Sunday, the brilliant Gerry Trudeau blasted bloggers, politically-motivated bloggers in particular, in his widely-read comic strip “Doonesbury.” Although I agree with Trudeau for the most part (I do feel that the majority of bloggers, even the suprisingly-popular ones, are around only for the short-term, and that this blogging thing will fade eventually), I do feel it is necessary to defend myself against these attacks. So if you will allow me…

Well it is about time. Why has the media picked up this blogging thing anyway? I mean, blogs have always been around; they used to be called websites. Websites that were updated often, that is. I have had a website since the heyday of the dot-com thing. I was in college then, an undergrad at Syracuse. Man, Clinton was still the president. I didn’t call what I had a blog though; it was a website. And I updated it almost everyday. (I think.)

Yes, I agree with you! But I am not one of them. I am employed, full-time, as a geotechnical engineer. I would love a job in journalism, but let’s get real. I have thought the same thing for a long time, with Wonkette and Josh Marshall and Markos of Daily Kos; I mean, what the fuck?

Why do I do this? It keeps me sane. With the craziness around us and with the speed that it travels by, it is amazing I retain anything besides what I ate for lunch earlier today. “Bush is an asshole.” I know this is not original, and I am sure that you can read relatively the same opinion at many other places on the web, but I’m telling you, my shit is original. And besides, it’s just for me. Eventually I can look back and relive this time of my life. (A few visitors wouldn’t hurt though, but that’s just the topping, I swear.)

Plain and simple, anyone that is looking for ad-revenue to fund, or even profit from, their blog is clinically insane. I do not look for revenue; I do this for free. I do have Google Adsense running on the farthest right-side panel because it makes sense to do it. (I’d be crazy not to.)

That being said, I hope you continue to visit reyonthehill (that means you); I mean it.

I still love that comic… way too funny. I used to run my own site too. Back then, I just called it a “home page”. lol
