Bush Defies Logic, Nominates Qualified Person To Head FEMA

Now, that is a headline. Bush has named a former firefighter and well-qualified R. David Paulison, who has been “head of the FEMA’s emergency preparedness force,” to head FEMA, replacing Michael Brown who resigned today. (Yahoo! News)

Hmm; emergency preparedness. Seems like that would have been the logical nominee the first go-around. (Although, working with horses, any animal really, is tough work; even if your bad at what you do.)

Well, let me voice my real thoughts on the Brownie situation (as Bush would say). Once the waters held by the breached-levee flooded the lowest parts of the city of New Orleans, there was little to nothing Mike Brown could have done. His job was to be prepared. He wasn’t. Brown derelicted his duties, and acted shamefully when light was shown on his poor work. He should have been fired; instead, he was forced to resign.

I am also, it seems, one of the very few who feel that the replacing of Brown by Coast Guard Vice Adm. Thad W. Allen as in charge of hurricane relief efforts is not that critical and stunning. The Secretary of Defense not only deals with the war in Iraq, but deals with all of the U.S. military operations, right? Allen, whom I believe should have been named to lead rescue efforts the night of the flooding (or even better, the day before when the events that occured were heavily and correctly forecasted), has the training, the knowledge, and the personnel to do the job. Once again, if the city library is on fire, you don’t send in the mayor, you get the fire chief to call the shots.

Brown is out, and that is a damned good thing, but I will not call for a criminal indictment, a la kos. Brown was a politician who performed poorly. Markos’ rhetoric, although it doesn’t hurt, certainly doesn’t help anybody, or make any difference in progressing society. The “let’s sue the president” mentality is a tad old, a tad juvenile, and simply wasted breath.
