Yahoo! Makes Deal With The Devil

News has come that Yahoo! and Microsoft have joined forces in their attempt to challenge America Online in the “Instant Message war” (which is pretty much a rerun of the browser wars). Basically, users of the two systems can now communicate between each interface (and on the third day, god created the mountains).

My question is, and always will be, why are large companies (Microsoft aside, we know they want to conquer humanity, but Yahoo!, Google, etc.?) striving to compete with AOL and their AIM application? Does AIM, a free service, with the dinky and annoying ads, make AOL any money? Will the investment, and the partnership with satan, bring Yahoo! the profit it needs to compete? Isn’t AOL basically dead, and aren’t the only things keeping them afloat, forty-year old soccer moms and teens using AIM, a temporal market sensitive to long-term AOL success, which is bleak at best? (Just my opinion.)

Oh, by the way, you can reach me via AIM at reyonthehill.
