My Thoughts On Mr. Williams

I have refrained from posting my thoughts on Stanley Williams’ pending death sentence, but I will holdout for no longer. I am a steadfast opponent of the death penalty; I feel the greatest penalty one could receive for committing a crime would be life imprisonment. That being said, I strongly feel that Williams’ life should not be spared. It is my opinion that all persons on death row should receive clemency, not just “Tookie.” What about the next person? How can we spare one person, and not the next? Without a blanket clemency for all persons, and a federal ban on the death penalty, I can not support clemency on an individual basis. Mr. Williams was convicted and throughout the lengthy appeals process, his sentence has not been commuted. Mr. Williams has not expressed sorrow for his crimes; his supporters state that “he has changed,” but wouldn’t we all behind bars. The laws of the state of California state that Mr. Williams should be put to death. The fact of the matter is the death penalty needs to be banned, whether or not Mr. Williams’ life is spared.
