Bay Area Television

One of the many benefits the San Francisco bay area affords its residents, besides the great climate, weather, location, views, history, and people, is its local television. The care that goes into the PBS programming alone (resulting from the local dedication to funding the stations) is a marvel. In fact, I have four high-quality PBS stations that regularly air watchable programs (and I mean watchable, not just the well-I-guess-I-can-learn-about-this programs) as a part of my satellite cable package. But the true gem of the bay area TV stations are the local programs on the network-affiliated broadcast channels. The CBS affiliate, KPIX or CBS5, airs a nightly program that competes with ET, Extra, and Wheel of Fortune (sarcasm), called “Eye on the Bay.” And the non-affiliated KRON channel airs endless bay-area and SF-specific programs, namely “Bay Cafe,” a cooking and restaurant program, and “Bay Area Backroads,” a travel guide for residents, both of which are must-see television. I’m truly suggesting that if it were CSI or Bay Area Backroads, you would have to make a choice. KRON also airs hour-long specials and series that delve into the unique history of San Francisco and the surrounding bay area. It is interesting to wonder, however, that similar to weather and traffic, did I really take the time to notice the local program offerings a few years ago when I was growing up in Buffalo or going to school in Syracuse? Probably not. But, for now, until I see it with my eyes, the bay area certainly offers the most unique and eclectic local programming in the nation. (And I’m watching you, DC.)
