Check (a) for "Civil War," (b) for "Terrorism"

Bush is chronically misinformed about the situation in Iraq, it seems, including the highly-praised election process. “You know, I hear people say, well, civil war this, civil war that. The Iraqi people decided against civil war when they went to the ballot box. And a unity government is working to respond to the will of the people.

I don’t even think the Iraqi people knew that was on the ballot: Check (a) for “civil war,” (b) for “terrorism.”

You know, even if this was true (which it isn’t), I have always thought that a referendum should be placed on the ballot in every presidential election (as needed) in this country. For example, “Should the U.S. provide blanket health care coverage for those who cannot afford it?” I say, “yes.” Or, “Should the U.S. abandon the Social Security system?” I say, “yes, yes, yes.” This would work perfectly. Now, the referenda shouldn’t become instantaneous law (that would be silly), but the results should give our representatives a better idea of what the public thinks, and maybe, just maybe, they will get something done.

Good idea?
