COTL: The No Rules Edition

Posted at 6:19 am on Wednesday, August 2, 2006, in Uncategorized, and tagged , .

After posting my callout for submissions into the “No Rules Edition” of the Carnival of the Liberals, and getting a slight rebuke from the boss in the official nod, I have received 25 submissions for consideration. So getting down to 10 was pretty easy… I had thought.

Let me start off by saying that although this is the “No Rules Edition” of the carnival, there were several rules. I know, quite a paradox. A few submissions (five to be exact) dropped out because they grossly violated one (or more!) of these rules. Down to 20. A couple more dropped out because they must’ve been erroneously submitted to this carnival because they had made no contextual sense to me whatsoever, and trust me, I tried. (Oh, how I tried.) Down to 18. In the end, I was able to eventually whittle my way down to the required 10 posts (but I do include a rule-breaking bonus post). I would like to take a moment and apologize to those posts who had not made the final cut; not to the bloggers who submitted the post, mind you, but the posts themselves. These posts, and the blogs they represent, gave it their all. And they all deserve attention.

I have broken down the posts into three categories — medalists, humor, and honorable mentions. The individual pieces were so starkly different, it was difficult to compare and make choices. Either way, I am declaring a winner…

GOLD MEDALIST

When I was an undergraduate at Syracuse, I had noticed the large number of female students (many of whom were ridiculously attractive), and I thought to myself, “What the hell is going on here?” Nancy Jane More presents Women are excelling in college. This is a crisis? (posted at In This Moment).

SILVER MEDALISTS

Although I personally feel that gay marriage presents itself as one of the “greatest threats to humanity,” Screwy Hoolie presents another: Pakistan’s nuclear ambitions and how the U.S. is Looking The Other Way (posted at Scrutiny Hooligans).

Speaking of gay marriage, A Big Fat Slob (who just happens to be a Yankees fan; absolutely pitiful) reviews a recent court case in a blogpost titled Washington State Supreme Court Rules Against Equal Rights and reveals that it all comes down to sex (posted at A Big Fat Slob). (I know, I let rule number 4 slide a bit here.)

HUMOR

Jess Henig presents a Pop quiz for the president (posted at Bee Policy). I’m afraid to admit I failed miserably.

Madeleine Begun Kane posted a dandy limerick Ode To The Groper that defines the essence of Bush in less than 30 words (posted at Mad Kane).

David presents Top 10 reasons I’m glad Bush is President (posted at The Good Human).

And I blame everything on Jesus. Blue presents a cartoon titled Playing the blame game (posted at Pollyticks.com).

HONORABLE MENTION

The Ridger explains why she watches the Daily Show — a little known commodity called “truth” (yes, I have never heard of it either) — in a post titled More Americans get their news from TDS than probably should? (posted at The Greenbelt).

Equating joining a church with the date-rape culture of a fraternity or sorority? I like it. Monica Bielanko presents Apocalypse Party! (And You’re Invited) (posted at The Girl Who).

The topic of hate crimes is bit of a downer (and, to me, the subject really only conjures up thoughts of that one South Park episode), but Marcella Chester presents Hate Crimes: What Are They? And Who Can Be Charged For Them? (posted at abyss2hope).

BONUS

A conservative decided to submit an entry (and maybe it was for the wrong carnival)… A chickenhawk’s diary on how he (or is it she?) copes with being a chickenhawk coward hiding in the closet until mom comes home in a blogpost titled Proud to Be a Chickenhawk (posted at Jon Swift). Chickenhawk. (Hey, you sent it in and it made the cut. What more do you want? Sympathy?) The only thing more pathetic than a chickenhawk is a chickenhawk who likes to hunt.

Well, I hope you have enjoyed the “No Rules (Some Rules Apply) Edition” of the Carnival of the Liberals. I truly hope to see you again some time. I feel that we have gotten to know one another over these past two weeks as I have read over your blogs and perused your profiles for juicy bits of information. Like the puppy I never had, I will never forget you.

The next edition of the carnival will be held at One Flew East in two weeks.
