Old Newspapers

Probably everyone has heard of the plane crash in NYC, killing a Major League Baseball player, Cory Lidle, who was reportedly the pilot. I do not wish to blog the sad story but to add an anecdote about how weird life is. My new wife and I returned from our honeymoon this past Monday. On Tuesday evening, while cleaning up around the house, I found a stash of old newspapers I haven’t read, including a dated sports section of the San Francisco Chronicle. While skimming this August paper, I read one of the sidebar panels, which quoted a player… “After every start, he didn’t run or lift weights. He would sit in the clubhouse and eat ice cream.” That was Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Arthur Rhodes ripping on the then recently-traded pitcher Cory Lidle (who upon his trade to the New York Yankees ripped on several Phillies players). The next day, and several weeks since the paper’s publication, Cory Lidle would die in a horrific plane crash. As I read about the story of the baseball player who had died in the plane crash, I thought to myself, “That can’t be the same guy from the quote I read randomly yesterday, right? Nah.”
