The monthlies.

  • In the News

    - Republicans being republicans. – And maybe Bush didn’t understand the question posed to him from ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos, under the headline, “Bush Accepts Iraq-Vietnam Comparison;” maybe Bush doesn’t realize the U.S. lost the Vietnam War (but how could he have known, he wasn’t there).

  • Europe Lesson No. 1: Everyone Smokes

Everyone smokes. And I mean everyone. Your mother smokes, your grandmother smokes, your sister and brother smoke, your nephew smokes. Your friends smoke, your cousins smoke, your coworkers smoke. And, yes, you smoke. You smoke before dinner, during dinner, and of course, after dinner with coffee. You smoke during lunch and breakfast too. You smoke [...]

  • Hockey Night In Canada

The point of the game of hockey is to score more goals than your opponent, thus securing a victory. The Philadelphia Flyers failed to do so last night in Buffalo as the Sabres edged the Flyers 9 to 1. Ouch. Sabres are now 6-0. (Check out the highlights.)

  • Afternoon Politoon… Fear Speaks.

Doonesbury presents an interesting fact… easily dismissed by fear. (Click on image for full cartoon.) Image: Yahoo!

  • Lessons From Europe

Over the next few days (and I mean it this time; I know I have a habit of saying something along the lines of, “I will discuss this tomorrow,” and then never do, but not this time; I hope), I will go over a few things that I have learned about life in Europe from [...]

  • revolution:/download/

Eighteen months ago I blogged briefly about a new idea I had, called “revolution:/download/,” an effort to spread alternative software packages in place of the staples of your desktop, typically pre-loaded for you maliciously by Microsoft. After failing to sell this great new idea around the bay area (read: around my office), I decided to [...]

  • Morning Politoon… "Google, I’m Listening."

Mike Smith of USA Today editorializes… (We’ve all been there.) Image: Time.com

  • Turtle Love, Part 1

I alluded to this video while away on holiday; behold the power of love, Provence-style. [High-quality version; medium-quality version, shown below.]

  • Morning Politoon

It’s still morning on the west coast, suckers. Any more snow? Haha. Pat Oliphant examines the Jesus that no one really knew… Image: Yahoo!

  • Playoff Beard

I return home and immediately the A’s lose the first two games (at home) in the ALCS. Is it time for me to shave my playoff beard? (It doesn’t seem to be helping.)

  • Infinite Regression Starts Here

I just had one of those incredibly philosophical and wholly self-serving thoughts. (Yes, one of those.) If I were to blog my blog, say, “check out this blog,” would that cause an infinite regression to take place? (Or, should I stop worrying about these things?)

  • Old Newspapers

Probably everyone has heard of the plane crash in NYC, killing a Major League Baseball player, Cory Lidle, who was reportedly the pilot. I do not wish to blog the sad story but to add an anecdote about how weird life is. My new wife and I returned from our honeymoon this past Monday. On [...]

  • Voter Interest Not In GOP Interest

As I watch the president weakly defend his actions and inaction with regards to Iraq and North Korea (and Iran), the worst news possible for republicans is not the Foley-page scandal, but this: people are interested in politics (for the moment, that is). “Seventy percent say they are talking politics with family and friends.” You [...]

  • Afternoon Politoon

I am predicting that I will hit the jet-lag wall around 3pm (midnight, Paris time). What’s the over/under for something like this? Toles uncovers the one thing the Bush administration did not see coming… Image: Yahoo!

  • Back In The Saddle

Well, following twenty-four hours of travel (itinerary shown at end), and a brief night’s sleep, I am back at work… and it feels so very very good. Being gone for over a month does a job on your body (and by the end of week two, you really start to miss your shower at home). [...]
