revolution:/download/

Eighteen months ago I blogged briefly about a new idea I had, called “revolution:/download/,” an effort to spread alternative software packages in place of the staples of your desktop, typically pre-loaded for you maliciously by Microsoft.
After failing to sell this great new idea around the bay area (read: around my office), I decided to go at-it on my own. I created a simple website for the project and have added to the initial list, including software titles for web browsers, music and photo collection, office productivity and email clients. As the list of viable web-based titles increase, what I refer to as “webware,” this list will continue to grow to include social networking sites, online calendar services, etc., e.g., 30 Boxes and meebo.com.
So, when you become tired of iTunes, and you want some Firefox-based music collection software, don’t balk when you discover Songbird, the best non-iPod software out there today, because I’ve known about it and have used it for months. Impressive, isn’t it?
