Fifty-Eight Is Not What It Used To Be

In lieu of Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies winning the National League Most Valuable Player Award, the winner of which will be announced shortly, it should be noted that Howard hit the quietest 58 home runs in the history of Major League Baseball. Fifty-eight home runs, good for tenth best ever (or fourth best if it happened before 1997). Fuckin’ jesus. Howard is only the thirteenth player in history to hit 58 home runs in a season, and is one of eight players to do so since the 1996 season.
