Bye, Bye, Bayh

Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana — whom many had assumed would make a run for the Oval Office in 2008 — has stated that he will not seek the presidency. I posted my immediate thoughts on Jake Tapper’s blog…
The field may just be too crowded. I mean, there are a lot of big names being mentioned on the democratic side — Kerry, Gore, Clinton, Edwards. Is there even any more money left to be raised?
Now, if this is the case (which it may be), that has to be wholly unfortunate, and it is another piece of mounting evidence that public funding of campaigns is needed to ensure that the best people are able to run, not necessarily those with the best ties to raise money.

You raise a very important issue which I hadn’t even considered. Sen. Bayh is a sensible, effective, accomplished senator, but he doesn’t have the charisma or name recognition of some of the other Dems who are or are thinking about running. He probably also doesn’t have the best ties to raise money, which spelled curtains for his campaign. Things might have turned out differently if he had public funding!
