In the News… Between Iraq And A Hard Place.

- “The United States faces a ‘grave and deteriorating’ situation after nearly four years of war in Iraq.” Well, at least it’s conclusive.
- The president urges “the members of Congress to take this report seriously,” and states that this “is an opportunity [for the White House and Congress] to come together and to work together on this important issue.” What is this, Social Security reform?

Special Comment: This is a war that this president started, on false pretenses and without provocation, and for the past three years, this president has insisted that his critics were wrong, that we were winning in Iraq. But the prevailing winds have changed. And now it is time for Congress to take this report “seriously?” If it weren’t for Congress, this report wouldn’t exist, Mr. President. It is time for you to take this report seriously, and for you to stop playing politics with the war in Iraq.
Take it away, Dubya… “And I understand how difficult [it is to work together], but this report will give us all an opportunity to find common ground, for the good of the country not for the good of the Republican Party or the Democratic Party, but for the good of the country.” Yes, as we have clamored all along, let’s do what is right for the democratic party.

When the President had public opinion on his side, he and his administration couldn’t stop reciting the differences to anyone who’d listen between the bravehearted Repubs and the spineless Dems. Now that public opinion about the Iraq war is against him, he wants to work with the Dems to find a solution, probably so he could blame it on them if it doesn’t work. I’m sure he’s finding it awfully hard to change his behavior after six years of doing whatever he wanted with Congress acting like a rubber stamp!
