Why is what the democrats do always perceived to be “focus grouped” while the republicans “stick to principles” or “reassure the base?”

I agree with your comment to Jake’s blog. It’s all connotative language which almost always portrays the Repubs as the “sensible” ones and the Dems as the “loonies.”
