Giving Back

Every now and then you have to give back to your community, like sponsoring your local PBS/NPR station. Well, this year, my wife and I have decided to open our doors to the less fortunate, and adopt a sheltered puppy. Her name is Holly, she is a lab-mix, and we will pick her up on Saturday (and drive three hours to do so). We don’t know if we will keep her name — she is only nine weeks — and I am sure she won’t mind a change. (I’m thinking “Megara,” wife of Hercules.)

Here are the only photos we have of the puppy…

Although we are relatively upset about taking her away from her family, the six of them probably would have never gotten along anyway…

We have spent the last week buying what we think we need and puppy-proofing the house. (I hope she is already housebroken.) We have been reading up on training and welcoming a puppy into our home, and we’re just hoping we are prepared.

Holly, er, Megara, is also destined to become the mascot of my softball team.

Congratulations on the new addition to your family. But unless you have lots of friends who know their Greek mythology, you’ll constantly be explaining your puppy’s name. Do you really want to saddle your puppy with that burden?

Thank you. And I do try to surround my self with Greek mythology specialists. (If her name was “Megara,” however, we would probably end up calling her “Maggie” or something.)
