In the News… Raising Sea-Lame Ducks.

- Every penny counts… Exxon’s profit rose 9 percent to a record of $39.5 billion, the largest annual profit ever for an American company.” On an (un)related note, I filled up my gas tank at 6:30am yesterday. The cost was $2.49/gallon. When I drove by the same station heading home at 5:30pm, the cost was $2.53. A mid-day price change?

- Take that, Dubya… Al Gore has been “nominated for the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for his wide-reaching efforts to draw the world’s attention to the dangers of global warming.Well, the presidency probably still hurts. At least a little. (By the way, I’m not worried about a rise in sea-level; my house sits eighteen feet above it.)

- And Bush has reached lame duck status… finally. “As Bush signed a few autographs and shook hands, a man sitting at the counter lit a cigarette and asked for more coffee. Another woman, eyeing Bush and his entourage, sighed heavily and went back to her paper. She was reading the obituaries.

Ironically enough, the President received such a cool welcome at a restaurant in Peoria, Illinois (my hometown, although I don’t admit it to everyone), which used to be a voting stronghold for him. It just goes to show you that even he doesn’t “play in Peoria” anymore. I have to wonder if Bush’s name–or at least his political career– wasn’t among the obituaries that the woman was reading about.
