Puppy Training Me

Well, the life that I once knew is officially over. (My wife’s too.) That realization came to me when our new puppy Haley (we decided on Haley, thinking the transition from “Holly” would be easier) pooped in our house for the second, third and fourth time. And it was only 6 o’clock.

The first night was even more of a horror — getting up five or six times to take Haley to “get busy.” And then praising her for it.

The second day was governed by doubt; did we make the right decision? Another four weeks of pee and poo everywhere? But last night, she was real good, only having to go once. Of course, she went outside and peed, wanted to go inside, went pee again, wanted to go inside, cried and whined, then pooed. “Good girl, Haley, good girl.” Opening the door she ran in and in less than ten seconds pooed again on our floor.

But I’ll tell you, the life that we knew — drinking fine wines in front of a fire, lunches in Napa, dinners in San Francisco — isn’t even close to the worth of the look on Haley’s face…

Haley

She will be the death of me, I’m telling you.

You’re hooked, no doubt about it, and you’ll never escape! If it’s any consolation, just consider this practice for the future when you decide to have another little creature around the house–and I’m not talking about dogs.
