4.2

A little while ago, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake shook the bay area. The event has made a lot of news, despite being well below a true strong earthquake (~M5). My wife was on the second floor, while I was on the first. She felt a strong rolling motion, while I felt almost nothing. I heard some glasses chattering in the cabinets in the kitchen, and felt a very subtle side-to-side movement. I initially thought it resulted from a train moving along the tracks nearby, but our puppy (now 12½ weeks) became very quiet and still. My wife from upstairs began to yell, “There is a huge earthquake.” Huh, I replied. By the time I realized it was an earthquake, the event had ended. California.

You Californians always know how to have so much fun! If it’s not brush and forest fires or earthquakes, then it’s musdlides and torrential rains! All we have to deal with in Chicago is cold weather precipitation that changes from rain and fog, to freezing rain and sleet, to snow, to slush, to rain again, and back to snow at some point, which is where I stopped keeping track. We just don’t have as much meteorological fun as you folks!
