Bottom 5 Web2.0 Applications

Reader chuck asks [paraphrased], “Alright, what are the five worst Web2.0 applications, you liberal douchebag?” (I added that last part for effect.)

There are too many. But, if I had to, I would go after the more popular ones.

(1) del.icio.us. First of all, no one cares what you are looking at on the internet. If you’ve bookmarked it, so have a bunch of others. You should all get together for some tea. (I guess that is the point.) Secondly, what is the deal with the url, separating ‘del,’ ‘icio,’ and ‘us?’ That is a stoner’s worst nightmare.

(2) Snap. You see this annoying feature on almost every blog these days. The crux of the argument against this foolish add-on is in the publisher’s description: “By rolling over any link, the user gets a visual preview of the site without having to go there, thus eliminating wasted trips to linked sites.” Umh, if you consider a couple clicks of the mouse “wasted trips,” the future does not look bright for young America. (Also, the blogger who uses this should consider that the image that pops up using Snap is an image that represents their blog, and sometimes that has nasty repercussions.)

(3) MySpace. This doesn’t even actually qualify as Web2.0 because the user interface is so piss poor.

(4) LaLa.com. A tool for trading CDs online. CDs. Yea, so ten years ago.

(5) dodgeball.com. An interesting feature that allows your cellphone to get in contact with “like-minded” people within ten blocks. The only people this can possibly appeal to is swingers, but I guess that is a huge market.

Dishonorable Mention

Gmail (overrated); and Kudos (an impersonal way to say thanks).
