California Chooses Nominee

With California moving up its primary to February, “a big win in California would probably cement the place of a [Democratic] frontrunner, no matter his or her showing in other early primary states.

This is great news, as this will allow a truly electable candidate (in the general election) become front-and-center, be it Clinton, Obama, Gore, Kerry, Edwards, etc., and not simply reward those candidates that have microtargeted the small states of Iowa and New Hampshire. Anyone can impress a coffee-house of twenty people in Manchester in the dead of winter. All it takes is one good joke. And bam! you’re the party nominee.

A big win in California would not only fix the frontrunner’s position, but would also be a decisive enough victory to permit marginal campaigning in the rest of the primaries during the rest of the primary season, saving for later the serious, mano-a-mano campaigning against the Repubs’ candidate. I still think it would make more sense to have a national primary in all states simultaneously, rather than have states reposition their primaries to become king- (or queen-) makers.
