Enter Emailgate

A few days ago I blogged that something big was bound to happen, and sometime soon. (No, Imus getting fired doesn’t count.) I think that my prediction lies with the Karl Rove email controversy, a story that has grown because of the Washington Post’s prolific blogger Dan Froomkin, who should probably be considered the king of liberal bloggers. (And he is part of the mainstream, too, which is a plus.)

The White House is on their heels on this issue. Their spokesman has said, “We screwed up, and we’re trying to fix it.” (That is a first.) This is not only a political issue, like who said what and when, but the administration’s official emails are required to be preserved according to law. And the president’s high-ranking staff purposefully subverted the law in order to mask their political operations. Where are those emails, what was written, how much contact did the White House have with Jack Abramoff? There are a lot of questions that need to be answered.

If Imus hadn’t become a major story, the email story (however unsexy) would have been front page news. And with the democrats calling for investigations into the matter, Attorneygate-turned-Emailgate will be the next big thing.
