On the Road

My Xterra is six miles shy of fifty thousand, and I should eclipse the milestone during this evening’s commute. How many miles should I expect my truck to reach? One hundred thousand? One hundred fifty?
It has been a glorious fifty thousand, that is for sure, all under my watch. All around the bay area, over the Golden Gate maybe fifty times, to Tahoe in the snow and summer a couple of handful of times, Yosemite, Napa/Sonoma, Mendocino, Highway 1 north and south of San Francisco, Marin County, Santa Cruz, Monterey and Carmel, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles, Kings Canyon and Sequoia, Redwood, Fresno, Eureka and Shasta. Where else can we go? Maybe Oregon (pronounced “Or-eh-gin,” not “Or-eh-gahn,” as I foolishly did when I arrived in California a little less than five years ago); Mexico; Grand Canyon. Will it all take place in my Xterra, my wife in the passenger seat, our puppy Haley in the back? Maybe, but first I need an oil change; I’m overdue.
Yass, Yass,* I am currently reading Kerouac’s On the Road so this blog-post title is the pinnacle of cheese.
* As Dean Moriarty would say, “Yass, yass.”
