The Legend of Tony Soprano’s Ringtone

At 10:28pm last night I nearly shouted, “Oh shit, the Sopranos.” I forgot all about it. Having missed the two previously-aired editions (9pm EST, or 6pm reyonthehill time, on HBO east, and 9pm reyonthehill time on HBO west), I checked to see that the first episode of the season re-airs on HBO2 east at 10:35pm. Seven minutes. I ran upstairs, logged onto DirecTV, ordered HBO, and with a minute to spare, my wife and I were able to watch the first episode of the last season last night. Eight more to go.

My thoughts: pretty damn good, no matter what any of the paid pundits force down our throats. The Sopranos is simply the best-directed, best-produced drama on television.

My bold prediction: Christopher Moltisanti, the heir to the throne, meets his long-awaited demise.

Interesting point. We heard Tony’s cellphone ring a few times last night, and darned if you didn’t notice, it is the same exact ringtone that Tony has had for years. Are you telling me, with all of the Feds on Tony, Tony hasn’t switched phones at all over the years? Not once? Or, with all damage Tony has suffered, self-inflicted vehicular (how many Escalades has he had?), gun shot wounds, etc., Tony’s phone hasn’t been banged up in the process? Not once? Tony’s phone hadn’t accidentally fallen out while pushing Big Pussy overboard at the end of the second season? (I know that when I get out of my SUV too fast, my phone never fails to fall out and bounce around the pavement below. Tony goes on killing sprees up-and-down the Atlantic seaboard and he has never lost his phone.) Or, is it that Tony always remembers to set his ringtone to match his old one when he does get a new phone? Does Tony in fact download the old-school ringtone with his new phone since new phones only have Timberlake and Fergy ringtones, and not the classics? Something doesn’t add up. Wouldn’t Tony be using a series of disposable phones to throw off the Feds? Why is Tony obsessed with his ringtone? Is this simply a director’s decision to not confuse the audience with the more likely scenario of Tony having at least a few different ringtones over the years? The myth continues.
