Why is ‘laughter’ pronounced “laffter” and ‘slaughter’ (‘laughter’ with an ‘s’ in front) pronounced “slawter”?
How can you go fishing for ‘bass’ (pronounced “bahss”) in the morning and play the ‘bass’ (pronounced “base”) guitar in the evening?
The english language does not make sense.

You’re right. For example, the word “fish” can be spelled “ghoti,” if you use the “gh” sound from the word “enough,” the “o” sound from the word “women,” and the “ti” sound from the word “fiction.”
