I've avoided John Fowles' works ever since I tried to read "The French Lieutenant's Woman" and couldn't muster enough interest in ANY of the characters in the book. That, plus the Matrushka-doll construction of the novel, didn't compel me to read beyond about half of the book. I kept reading, hoping against hope, that things would get better. They didn't.

You should read something more spirited and lighthearted, like "Atlas Shrugged." Then, you'll know what misery really is.
