Skeeter Libby

The Libby commutation is more polarizing than the Iraq war or abortion, it seems. With Iraq, you have middle ground on both sides, same with abortion, but with the Libby decision, everyone on the right believes (or says to believe) it is a good thing, and that actually Bush didn’t go far enough (read: pardon), and everyone on the left is up in arms.

One thing is clear: I. Lewis “Scooter” Scooter Libby did his job. He protected the president and vice-president, and his efforts are not going unnoticed or without some sort of compensation, whatever the worth of a get-out-of-jail-free card is. And the war in Iraq continues, the reason Libby lied to cover-up the outing of a CIA agent, to punish a war critic, to shield the lies and misleading statements on Iraq’s non-existent WMDs, to start a war to make the wealthy even more wealthy.

Although it may be more polarizing, it is much more evanescent an issue than the war will ever be. Most people outside of Washington see it as no big deal, since Libby is well-connected and well-off financially, and people of that sort always get out of legal entanglements. More than anything else, I think, the Libby commutation has shown that the quality of justice in the US depends on who you know.
