Left-wing vs. Right-wing Brains

A new study concludes that “liberals could be expected to more readily accept new social, scientific or religious ideas. But we knew that already.

Arguments with conservatives — especially these days, on the topic of global warming, specifically — are pretty textbook. It is not as though conservatives discount new research and emerging technologies because there is not enough data, or that the trials should be expanded to fully recognize concerns, or for any sound, scientific, legitimate reason. The conservatives’ reasons are that the research is essentially useless since the issue had been decided a long time ago — maybe Jesus said something, maybe this is how they did it in the fifties — and there is nothing that can be done — billion dollar research, fossil discovery — that will change their mind.

Ignorance breeds conservatism. Conservatism breeds ignorance. Kids, stay in school.

I think the findings of the study could be condensed to the straightforward precept that if you’re open to new ideas, you tend to be liberal; if you aren’t, you tend to be conservative. Conservatives, like Bush, have long displayed a rigidity of thinking that once an issue is resolved (at least to their satisfaction), that’s all there is to it, and there’s no need to revisit it. Liberals tend to revisit issues when new facts appear and aren’t hesitant in revising their opinions.
