Democrat Bracket, Final

This is what it is all about.

(1) Hillary Clinton – NY
===================== Clinton
(8) Dennis Kucinich – OH

==================================== Clinton

(4) Bill Richardson – NM
===================== Richardson
(5) Joe Biden – DE

================================================== Edwards

(3) John Edwards – NC
===================== Edwards
(6) Christopher Dodd – CT

==================================== Edwards

(2) Barack Obama – IL
===================== Obama
(7) Mike Gravel – AK

There is really only one point to make here: Edwards can win the general election, and Hillary cannot (or at least there is a more likely chance that she won’t), and this is too big of an election to give away, because of presumed inevitability.

Edwards has a good chance to win Iowa, but that is not saying much. With the proper choice for a running mate, Edwards will make in-roads in the South, as well as take a few Midwest states, all the while holding on to the traditional blue states.

What will be a challenge if Giuliani is the opposing candidate, is making sure New York, California and Illinois — the big blue states — stay in the democrats’ corner. This is where the importance of the running mate comes in. Edwards is southern, but he is also running on a populist “us vs. them” platform.

Typically, a candidate would want to even out the ticket, and choose a more centrist running mate (a la Joe Lieberman, before he ate eggs Benedict), but to ensure a New York and California victory, in lieu of a strong contest from Giuliani, Edwards may need to tap the “Northern appeal.”

Edwards may be able to do both, however, with Biden or Clinton, even, but I’m sure they will not be interested. And more importantly, I am getting way ahead of myself; Edwards must do well in Iowa first.
