Half-Life Candidates

The rule of thumb for picking one’s candidate during the primary season, where being undecided is “okay,” is the same for paying property taxes: you should wait until the last possible moment. The reason is they may drop-out.
Bill Richardson, a one-time reyonthehill favorite, has just ended his campaign. That leaves three big contenders vying for the nomination — Hillary Clinton, John Edwards and Barack Obama — with Al Gore as the lone wild-card.
It seems there is a half-life system to these candidates, in regards to how I see my temporal support shifting. If I were asked to vote one year ago, or as pagans say, 12 months ago, I probably would have voted for Joe Biden. Six months ago, probably Bill Richardson. Three months ago, maybe John Edwards. It keeps changing, as well as it should. This is why mailing in absentee ballots — especially if you will be in town on Election Day — is unwise during primaries. If I were a Dodd supporter or a Richardson supporter, I would have lost my vote, as recently as this morning.
I have not yet put my full vote of confidence behind any candidate, much to the chagrin of my wife, who thinks I should make my mind up already. I’m actually more inclined to root for them all, since I have nothing to lose, and only insight to gain.
I will be voting February 5th, and although the majority of the also-rans have already dropped out (subtle hint to Kucinich and Gravel), anything can happen before then. Only when I am on my way to the voting booth will I make my final decision as to which democrat I will support. It is the only logical way to do it.

Given your record of endorsements, I’d sleep better if you wouldn’t endorse any of the Democratic candidates until February 6. However, please feel free to jinx, er, I mean endorse, any of the Republicans running for president.

My candidates all end up failing the reyonthehill primary, that is for sure.
