Wasted Votes

I’ve never been a supporter of absentee ballots. The main reason has always been the potential (or increased potential, that is) for voter fraud. The secondary reason, which has come into full light this primary season, is that it is wise to hold your vote until the last moment, namely election day. That doesn’t mean you can’t make up your mind months before the election; it just means you shouldn’t fill out your ballot weeks in advance and mail it in.

Take the case in California, where “voters are wishing they hadn’t done” just that. These people thought they were being wise. They made up their mind so why wait in a long line on election day, and what if they get sick, or what if they need to leave town.

In the end, however, many of them were foolish, and 165,000 Californians voted for John Edwards, sending in their absentee ballots before he dropped out of the race.

A wasted vote, maybe, but think about the convenience.
