McCain Victory Speech Liveblog

I am not surprised anymore at the lackluster victory speeches delivered by John McCain. The audience clearly would like to go home. And McCain struggles to work the crowd. He never breaks from the script, even if it tempers any enthusiasm that has built up in the crowd.

McCain thanks “independent-minded democrats.” Does this mean the courting of the base phase is over?

6:51pm
McCain’s speechwriter needs to resign. Two words: bor-ing.

6:53pm
McCain vows to defend the decision to go into Iraq — he is Bush’s lapdog — and almost receives a standing ovation. Almost.

6:54pm
“Sectarian violence that can quickly descend into genocide.” I see a campaign slogan in the making.

6:56pm
McCain has one of those stares… you know what I mean. He seems to stare at one spot as if he’s reading. Oh wait, he is.

7:00pm
“Leaders don’t pine for the past and dread the future.” Finally, a presidential nominee uses the term “pine” in my lifetime. (And it is a republican?)

7:01pm
“The contest begins tonight.” But the speech isn’t over. Nice job, speechwriter.
