Well, I finally finished the Last of the Mohicans last Friday. It was a complete disaster, but it had to do be done. The most frustrating part of the novel was the author’s recurring references to the book itself, reminding the reader that he/she was in fact reading a book. For example, Cooper would start a paragraph, “As the reader recalls from a previous chapter.” Poor writing. I’ll be watching the movie again soon (on VHS, because I own it), and compare the versions. I’m thinking the movie will be better.
Anyway, on to my new book, another classic, although this one more contemporaneous: Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises…

I think I was supposed to read this one in high school, I don’t exactly recall; either way, I’ve never read it. The book that I am reading is actually from my wife’s collection, and it is heavily vandalized. Sentences are underlined — in red — and notes are made in the margins (“he is abused by women”); it is quite distracting. I think I’ll manage however, especially since this book is a fresh breath of air following Mohicans.
