McCain’s Image Problem

Elections are about images. It may be unfortunate, but in today’s world of thirty-second soundbytes and an electoral process that whittles down important voters to a mere tens of thousands, it is a fact that we have to live with. The presidential election is foremost a beauty contest.

And no matter how many stodgy speeches John McCain makes, his chances for the presidency rely on whether or not he can escape this image

Image problems helped Mike Dukakis’ downfall in 1988, and John Kerry’s sport of choice — windsurfing — did not help matters in 2004.
