Mexican Thanksgiving
Posted at 4:13 pm | Filed Under Random Thoughts
I had an idea today (as I ate my last super asada for the next several days), and I thought I should share. Why not? A Mexican Thanksgiving feast...
Starter course: tortillas and guacamole;
Second course: vegetarian burrito;
Third course: chicken burrito (pollo);
Fourth course: steak burrito (asada); and
Dessert: crab ceviche.
It would be an all-day event. Who's cooking?

JFK
Posted at 10:01 am | Filed Under Travels
The forty-fifth anniversary of the assassination of John F. Kennedy came-and-went this weekend. I think that CBS should re-live those dramatic events, similar to how the cable networks have been paying tribute on anniversaries of nine-eleven, re-airing the events as if they were live. The aftermath of the JFK murder cemented television as a medium, [...]

Buffalo Road Trip
Posted at 9:47 am | Filed Under Travels
I spent some time planning a road trip around the Buffalo region a few weeks ago, but now that I think about it, it is probably impossible (or equally foolish).

First, it takes roughly three hours of driving, assuming no traffic on Thanksgiving weekend. Considering that we actually enjoy the stops, that is an easy [...]

Here, There

I will be in Buffalo for four nights this week. The forecast there...
And the forecast here (in California)...
I'll pack a sweater; maybe two.

Now do not get me wrong. I believe the vice-president when he said Richard Clarke "wasn't in the loop" on terrorism issues. I mean, Dick Cheney is a pretty reliable source. But still, I'd like to hear what Clarke has to say in his destined-for-textbook-status Against All Enemies...

This just goes to show how ignorant I am. I had no idea that the Russian mob had a strong presence in London. Note to self: When in London, avoid Russian mob.

The Blue Period

You may ask, is he really comparing himself to the famed 20th century painter? Yes, I am. First of all -- like me -- Pablo Picasso is overrated. We should admit that. And you do not need to go to Barcelona to see why. Second, why not? Politics is my art, and the blog is [...]

Rambo: First Blood
Posted at 9:53 am | Filed Under Film Retrospective
I'm kind of embarrassed to write this, but I fell asleep at points during this movie, and my wife stayed up the entire time, asking, "Why is he doing that?" and "Why did he have to arrest him, he didn't do anything?" which truly makes my point. Rambo: First Blood is the most underrated action [...]

Buffalo Takes A Seat
Posted at 9:42 am | Filed Under Uncategorized
The best possible scenario resulting from the appointment (and confirmation) of Hillary Rodham Clinton as President Barack Obama's Secretary of State, aside from the calm steady hand at the wheel of foreign policy, is the possibility for the ascension of a Buffalo politician to fill Clinton's Senate seat. The idea conjures up faded memories of [...]

State
Posted at 10:13 am | Filed Under Uncategorized
I would personally like to see Chuck Hagel or John Kerry in the role. After that, I wouldn't mind Hillary Clinton. It certainly makes sense politically for Obama, although the fear of a Secretary of State going "rogue" would persist. And last, at the very bottom of the list, only if everyone else in the [...]

Introducing Hassle-Free Foreclosures
Posted at 4:59 pm | Filed Under Uncategorized
I do not support a bailout of individual homeowners in today's mortgage crisis, nor do I think it is wise for the government to purchase such troubled assets from banks and lending institutions. In either of those two scenarios, the government is attempting to manufacture a soft-bottom for this market. I relate it to the [...]

Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (Original Theatrical Version)
Posted at 9:52 am | Filed Under Film Retrospective
Well, this is the best of the original three, topped off with the can't-be-missed Ewok celebration at the end, but overall, I'm disappointed with this famed trilogy. Princess Leia looked her best in this film. You know what I mean.

Free Markets In Question
Posted at 9:32 am | Filed Under Uncategorized
So this is what it has come to for President George W. Bush. In the waning days of his two-term administration, following a resounding defeat of his policies at the ballot box, the following headline on MSNBC... "Bush to defend 'free market' system." Well done, sir.
How bad do you have to be as president -- [...]

Retribution
Posted at 5:26 pm | Filed Under Uncategorized
I believe in political retribution. And although the dems may end up winning Minnesota and Alaska, the idea of placating Joe Lieberman in order to hold 59 instead of 58 seats doesn't make much sense. President-elect Barack Obama may want to rise above the pettiness of senatorial politics -- and he should -- but that [...]

Old-Fashioned Lemonade
Posted at 11:27 am | Filed Under Random Thoughts
Everywhere I turn, there is old-fashioned lemonade available to quench my thirst. What makes it old-fashioned exactly? And where is the "new" lemonade that it is being compared to? Did they stop using lemons for a period of time in the 80s? Is there a classic recipe that makes lemonade "old-fashioned"? I need more information. [...]

About Yesterday
Posted at 2:26 pm | Filed Under Uncategorized
I apologize for not posting yesterday. I was hungover from being wicked drunk. I called-in sick as a result. I was drunk last night too, but I made it to work this morning anyway. Tuesdays are rough, especially today; feels like Monday, actually. Drinking again tonight; likely hungover tomorrow. What are you looking at?

A Theory On Alcoholism
Posted at 4:17 pm | Filed Under Uncategorized
I initially developed this theory while drinking on Bourbon Street in New Orleans in September, so admittedly, it may be unpolished, but I'm willing to stand behind it.
There are four times in a person's life that he or she will become an alcoholic: (1) During high school, when one typically becomes first aquainted with alcohol; [...]

The Darjeeling Limited

A movie about normal people acting normal would be a nice change of pace. You know, something real Americans in real America can relate to. Natalie Portman does make a quality cameo appearance in the opening vignette.
