Retribution

I believe in political retribution. And although the dems may end up winning Minnesota and Alaska, the idea of placating Joe Lieberman in order to hold 59 instead of 58 seats doesn’t make much sense. President-elect Barack Obama may want to rise above the pettiness of senatorial politics — and he should — but that doesn’t mean that the Senate democrats should kowtow to Lieberman’s demands. Lieberman took a gamble; and he lost. He made another one. He lost again. Lieberman should lose his chairmanship — and his rank in the caucus — as a result. Party unity, my ass; Lieberman made his bed.

I, too, believe in retribution, at least in theory. But in practice it never seems to work as well as it should. If I were asked about what the Dems should do here (and, as of yet, I haven’t been), I’d suggest that they be gracious and let Lieberman retain his chairmanship, as President-elect Obama has suggested. The Dems can afford to do this: they look generousand magnanimous; they send a great bipartisan message to their colleagues and to the public; and they retain someone who agrees with them more often than not. “Tis sometimes better to turn the other cheek than to demand an eye for an eye.

So let me see… you are advocating for a bailout for Joe Lieberman?

Not a bailout, but a partisan rescue package for reform.
