Tip of the Week

I keep telling myself to keep everything in context. For example, what type of person reads a newspaper for tech advice? Probably not an internet savvy one, for sure, and most likely, an AOL dial-up subscriber. Nevertheless, this is the absolute worst tech advice I have ever seen, courtesy of the San Francisco Chronicle’s tech writer David Einstein…
Tip of the Week
Sometimes there’s nothing you can do to unstick a frozen computer screen. The mouse won’t close programs, and pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del doesn’t open the task manager (the other usual way to close things). What do you do then? Just turn the computer off and start over – by holding down the power button for a few seconds until the system shuts down. If you were working in a Microsoft Office program when the screen froze, you should be able to recover your document-in-progress.
Keep in mind — this was “tip of the week.” But as I said, I need to keep this in context. A person is frustrated with their computer at home, helpless to the technology that haunts him, reads the tech column in his daily newspaper, and voila, the tech tip he needs most: Turn off your computer if all else fails. (Actually, he’d hoped this was “tip of the week” last week.)
