The George W. Bush Institute Of Foreign Policy

Imagine this scenario: You are at a cocktail party, or with friends watching a baseball game, or whatever; you get the point, you are at some sort of gathering. The discussion turns to public infrastructure, and a self-proclaimed expert (even without saying that he is an expert, he exudes expertise through demeanor, use of terminology, etc.) goes on and on over this and that. Although it may be difficult to resist, you believe what he says, almost word for word. You may have your own opinion on the subjects discussed, but this man is an expert; he certainly sounds like one. And after a few conversations on the need for improved highways, levees, desalination plants and underground utilities, you finally discover what makes him such an expert on the subject: he was an engineer that helped design the original levees in and around New Orleans. Imagine this scenario. What would you think of his expertise after discovering this inconvenient truth?

Now, how would you respond to someone who tells you — today — that they are an expert on real estate or finance (because of their recent work in the field)? Would you honor this expertise, or would this be akin to George W. Bush lecturing on foreign policy?
