A photo of an in-game interview during the most recent A’s Superfan Network podcast…

These are the four things I like about this photograph…

1. Technology. I am podcasting effortlessly from the upper-deck of a decades-old stadium. With ease. I’m using my cellphone, and it works effortlessly. Thank you, Cisco, you started all of this.

2. Sitting in a near-empty ballpark — especially an old one — is not too different from being a homeless person. There are a lot of people moving around you, there is food and beer spilled all over, everyone smells like urine, and there is a sense of camaraderie that no one can explain.

3. No matter how loud the podcast gets, no one turns around and tells us to shut up. In fact, people nearby often start listening in, and in the past, they’ve even been interviewed. Because of the recent proliferation of blogs and podcasts, the A’s Superfan Network is accepted as the norm. We really need a banner: “On Air.”

4. Oakland Athletics green is the best looking green there is. Hands down. Go suck it, Boston.

Last weekend, the A’s Superfan Network made an attempt of broadcasting a college football game in Berkeley at the Cal-WaSU game. My alma mater ended up holding off the Cougars in not-so exciting fashion. The level of difficulty in broadcasting between baseball and football is stark and steep. In baseball, one can sit back and comment on the game while a play pretty much goes on. In football, there are twenty-two players doing something at once.

For example, in baseball, a play-by-play may go, “Johnson steps in, Miller on second, Johnson is hitting three thirty-three on the season, doubled his last time up, and the pitch, ball one, low and away, Johnson leads the team in RBI and is second in all of baseball with thirty doubles, and the one-oh pitch, a hard line drive to left-center, that may go to the wall, it does, it gets by the centerfielder, Miller rounding third, he will score easy, Johnson is into second with a stand-up double, three to two Blue Jays.”

And in football… “Wilson under center, third and seven from their own forty-two, they need a first down to keep the clock moving, James split out left, he has had a record day, eight receptions for a buck twenty-two, Davis comes in motion from the slot, five seconds on the play clock, Wilson takes the snap, fakes the hand-off, play-action left, sees no one open, rolls to the right, now he has got to move, oh what a block, Wilson still back there, waiting for someone to come open, and now he decides to run, makes a cut, gets hit, fumble, the ball is free, someone’s got it, who will it be, the defense is saying they’ve got it, the refs haven’t made their call, and the defense has it, Smitty comes up with it, what a hit by Fielder on Wilson, knocking the ball free, the defense comes up with the loose ball, first down Wildcats, they need a touchdown to tie, three minutes twenty seconds left in the game. Oh my.”

You see what I mean? If not, you will after listening to the podcast…

On Monday evening, I was the gracious guest (again) of Tour for the Cure as they travel across the country to every baseball stadium. Last week, I went to the Oakland A’s game, and on Monday, it was the fancy San Francisco Giants, at their wondrous ballpark…

The highlight of the game came when Barry Bonds hit his 747th career home run, good for second on the all-time home run list.

I podcasted, as promised, for the visiting A’s Superfan Network, with special co-host BHBJ, who spent some air-time discussing baseball with Tim Riley (of Tour for the Cure)…

I should mention that the drunkenness as the game goes on is clearly evident in the podcast, unlike previous ones, I think. (By the way, if you are unsure what the difference is between a safety and suicide squeeze, as heard in chapter 2, you can do some light reading.)

After the game, we were serenaded in the elevator…

Before the game, my friend and I had an opportunity to throw back a few pre-game beers with the Rat Man at a San Francisco brewery…

Note: I recorded via phone for this podcast (again), so the nightmare that was the audio quality from last week’s game will hopefully never happen again.

A week ago the A’s Superfan Network podcasted the A’s incredible 5-4 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Eric Chavez ended the game in the bottom-half of the eleventh inning on a walk-off solo home run (which was podcasted live, listen to final chapter).

The crew from Tour for the Cure, Tim Riley and Chris Richards (the two were guests in my home for the weekend), sat in the studio with Will and I for the majority of the game…

(In fact, the A’s Superfan Network were the guests of Tour for the Cure, who had secured free game tickets for Will and I, and we thank them for their generosity.)

This was the longest podcast in network history (and the first extra innings game), and it took some time to go through all of it (too much time, actually). In the end, we have sixty-three chapters published. All of them are very, very good. (Individual chapters typically range from 45 seconds to 2 minutes, with the average being roughly 75 seconds.)

Take it or leave it. And I say, “take it.”

The gem of this set is when BHBJ, a friend of mine, takes over (the “BHBJ takes over” chapter) and interviews a couple people sitting behind us. (One of the interviewees turned out to be “gop boy,” who happens to be in the Air Force, so being a republican in that case is okay.)

Note: The A’s Superfan Network podcast of last night’s game is being posted before Monday night’s due to technical difficulties. (Specifically, the mp3 recorder used for the earlier game resulted in sound quality far worse than that of the phone podcast used last night.)
