The priceless breaking news headline on MSNBC.com this morning... "Defense secretary Gates says U.S. does not want another cold war with Russia." Phew; that was a close one.

Oil Spoils

Posted at 1:07 pm | Filed Under Uncategorized

What is the GOP talking point? We need to give energy companies tax incentives to explore for oil. It seems quarterly profits of "$11.68 billion, the highest-ever for an American company," is not enough.
The recent extravagant run-up of prices at the pump (upwards of $4.50 for regular in California) was not because of the increased [...]

Stevens

Posted at 10:06 pm | Filed Under Uncategorized

Well, it certainly has come full circle, although it is not close to being over. The well-known senior senator from Alaska -- Ted Stevens -- has been indicted on federal bribery charges. Long-time readers of Josh Marshall's incomparable Talking Points Memo blog, myself included, have seen this coming for nearly two years, starting with the [...]

Golden Gate Redux

Posted at 6:22 pm | Filed Under Uncategorized

I guess I am not the only one... "Nearly 75 percent of the 1,600 respondents are opposed to any suicide barrier being built [on the Golden Gate Bridge] at all." Some semblance of sanity in an insane world. It continues, it being the world according to reyonthehill... "But of the barrier design options, the net [...]

Golden Gate Jumpers

I am not a proponent of modifying the Golden Gate Bridge to reduce the potential for the landmark to be a location and method for suicide (I think it is a silly idea), but with the five choices offered, I would choose the netting option. It certainly would have the least visual impact on the [...]

GE Weather

Posted at 1:19 pm | Filed Under Uncategorized

Am I the only one whose first thought upon hearing that NBC is buying the Weather Channel for $3.5 billion is that GE simply overpaid? Did they even try to negotiate that price? Was $3.2 billion out of the question? And what happens to Al Roker?

Gay, also known as Homosexual

Posted at 8:12 am | Filed Under Uncategorized

A pro-family group automatically replaces the word 'gay' with 'homosexual' when re-publishing AP stories, which is all fine and good, unless a person's last name is 'Gay.' Then it is just a downright hilarious headline... "Homosexual breaks Greene's US record in 100 at trials." (via kottke)

Morning Snark

Hundreds of same-sex couples were married last night in California, expressing their love amid the new-found freedom reinforced by the California courts. Aside from the bliss that comes with a wedding ceremony, the State of California is on pace to erase its record deficits in two years when the number of divorce filings is expected [...]

McClellan

Posted at 9:56 am | Filed Under Uncategorized

I hope Scotty McClellan continues to wear a flag pin on his lapel as he tours the press circuit this week, plugging his new book and responding to the myriad of questions, or the White House will add "terrorist sympathizer" to the disgruntled former press secretary's legacy.

Disgruntled

Posted at 9:03 am | Filed Under Uncategorized

Following the release of his revealing memoirs as White House press secretary, Scott McClellan has been regarded as simply "a 'disgruntled' former employee" by the Bush administration. I guess that is the door-prize treatment for being thrown under the bus during the Libby-Rove-CIA-leak-case fiasco.

Checked Bags Should Not Be Punished

Posted at 9:31 am | Filed Under Uncategorized

A major airline will now charge for a traveler's first checked bag, not just their second bag.
Unfortunately, the direct result of this will be more people trying to bring more bags on-board, meaning harder to find room in the overhead compartments -- which reminds me, items in the overhead compartment may have shifted during flight, [...]

I don't mean to make light of the devastating earthquake that has destroyed the lives of millions of people in China, in any way whatsoever, but the following news story on the subject seems illogical to me... In a report on the nation's one-child policy, a story suggests that "couples who lost an only child [...]

An interesting article in the San Francisco Chronicle today lists the top five superhero films ever made, and to no surprise, Batman Begins finds it rightful place at number one. This article does not do justice to the film however, since Batman Begins may be the best film ever, period.

Spitzer’s Choice

Alright, I will finally comment on the Eliot Spitzer (former esteemed governor of New York) call-girl affair...
Question: According to reports, Eliot Spitzer paid $4,300 for his liaison with Emperors Club call girl... was she worth it?
She was definitely worth it. I don't know about you, but a fleeting opportunity to be governor versus a once-in-a-lifetime [...]

George, George, George of the Jungle

I spent this past weekend snowboarding at Squaw Valley, host city of the 1960 Winter Olympics. There were near-blizzard conditions, and I surely got my ass-kicked. I am still sore in my legs, but I had one helluva fun time.
Then I caught this story this evening: "Skier dies after hitting tree at Squaw Valley." Scary.
